Summary

Faith justifies Gentiles and Jews alike while maintaining the law and annuls all boasting.

Core truth

Faith in Christ justifies all people and demonstrates works while eliminating any basis for boasting.

Division I(vv. 27-28)

Since justification is by the requirement of faith, not works, any boasting in faith is excluded.

Principle

Our faith is credited to us as a gift from God, therefore we have nothing to credit ourselves with.

Observations

  1. -Can we boast about having faith? -Boasting is not of faith -Does law cancel boasting? -A law of faith not works removes boasting (v. 27)
  2. Justification by faith is separate from works(v. 28)

Applications

  • What things am I tempted to take credit for in what faith has provided? What are my reasons for thinking this situation does not apply?
  • Why is the idea of receiving faith so difficult for some and not for others? If it is difficult, what kind of renewal do we need?
Division II(vv. 29-30)

God is God of Jews and Gentiles and justifies both through that same faith.

Principle

There is one plan of salvation for all mankind by God who is sovereign over all.

Observations

  1. God is the God of both Jews and Gentiles(v. 29)
  2. -There is one God -God justifies circumcised and noncircumcised by faith(v. 30)

Applications

  • Do I have exceptions in my thinking or beliefs regarding the plan of salvation for Jews and Gentiles or any group? What are they?
  • What is the reason for this "exception"? Am I listening to a superstition, a cultural "truth" or even a non-biblical contemporary Christian belief?
  • When I compare my exception to the Word, what do I learn?
Division III(v. 31)

The law is not invalidated but maintained and upheld by faith.

Principle

Faith gives believers the capacity to uphold the law that as nonbelievers, we did not have.

Observations

  1. -Is law invalidated by faith? -Actually, faith maintains the law(v. 31)

Applications

  • Where is my focus directed? Is it an invisible list that I feel I must accomplish or am I motivated by love and gratitude of Christ?
  • Are there areas where there is tension or layers of unbelief causing me to focus more on performance? What areas are those and how can I effect renewal?
